Join the Choral Society of Durham

The Choral Society of Durham invites singers in our community who share our love of choral music to audition for our upcoming season. Auditions for new members in the fall of 2021 will be held Monday, September 6 and 13. Use the audition form below to sign up.

Qualifications for acceptance include:

  • The ability to learn music independently
  • Accurate pitch
  • Enough volume to be heard in a large choir
  • The ability to blend well with other voices

Once you have auditioned, you should attend all rehearsals until you receive the audition results, since any rehearsals missed before being accepted will count as absences. Audition results are normally sent by email after all auditions have been completed.

To schedule an audition, please complete and submit the audition form.

Membership Policy

The Choral Society traditionally rehearses on Monday evenings during the concert season (September to May), from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled during concert weeks and occasionally at other times during the semester. Although the exact nature of the fall 2021 rehearsals has not yet been determined, the first rehearsal (Sept. 13) will be run entirely on Zoom. The CSD Health Committee is continuing to work hard to gather and assess various health data and to explore rehearsal options. We recognize that rehearsing in-person has tremendous appeal for many singers, but we also want to be very careful to protect everyone’s health. A decision will be made by late-August as to whether and to what extent we will be offering in-person rehearsals to fully vaccinated singers. The CSD Health Committee will continue to monitor rehearsals and the health situation in the fall and may make adjustments to rehearsals and performances. We expect that all rehearsals will continue to be available on Zoom. The concert schedule for the 2021-22 concert season is similar to those of past years, including a holiday concert and a performance of the Brahms Requiem with orchestra in May.  If it seems inadvisable to perform these or any of our other concerts in person, we will offer them as virtual performances.

Members are expected to attend each rehearsal in its entirety and should not miss more than 2 rehearsals per semester. Attendance will be taken at both Zoom and in-person rehearsals. Singers, whether rehearsing in person or via Zoom, are expected to learn some portion of the music on their own, with the help of online recordings, note-learning sites, and any audio files provided by the Choral Society.

Due to COVID-19, the CSD Board voted for annual dues from $100 for the 2021-22 season. Dues may be paid in 2 installments, September and January.  Dues for new members joining in the spring of 2022 will be $50. Scholarship funds are available to members for whom payment of dues constitutes a hardship. You may request assistance by emailing us at or calling the CSD office at 919-560-2733.

Returning Members

Members in good standing are not required to re-audition each year, except at the conductor’s discretion. Members who have taken leave for two or more consecutive semesters must re-audition.

Members meeting all requirements (e.g., maintaining acceptable attendance) may return each semester without re-auditioning.
