Join the Choral Society of Durham
The Choral Society of Durham invites singers in our community who share our love of choral music to audition for our upcoming season. Auditions for new members in the fall of 2020 will be done via Zoom sessions with our artistic director starting on August 12. After scheduling an audition, you will receive an electronic version of a short musical excerpt and a link to an online recording of it. You are asked to learn the music and then, at your audition, to sing it in time with the recording. Your audition will also include some simple warm-ups that cover your entire range.
Qualifications for acceptance include:
- The ability to learn music independently
- Accurate pitch
- Enough volume to be heard in a large choir
- The ability to blend well with other voices
Once you have auditioned, you should attend all rehearsals until you receive the audition results, since any rehearsals missed before being accepted will count as absences. Audition results are normally sent by email after all auditions have been completed.
To schedule an audition, please complete and submit the audition form.
Members in good standing are not required to re-audition each year, except at the conductor’s discretion. Members who have taken leave for two or more consecutive semesters must re-audition.
Members meeting all requirements (e.g., maintaining acceptable attendance) may return each semester without re-auditioning.
The Choral Society traditionally rehearses on Monday evenings during the concert season (September to May), from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. In the fall of 2020, those rehearsals will be done via Zoom sessions and may be somewhat shortened. Click here to see the CSD 2020-21 schedule. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled during concert week and occasionally at other times during the semester.
Members are expected to attend each rehearsal in its entirety and should not miss more than 2 rehearsals per semester.
The 2020-21 season will obviously be an atypical one for the Choral Society. Nevertheless, we plan to maintain activities and calendar that are as similar as possible to recent years. Concerts will be shorter than usual and will consist of some combination of virtual performances created by the Choral Society this year and recordings from past concerts. Learning the music will be accomplished partly through Zoom rehearsals, but singers will need to do much of the learning on their own, with the help of online recordings, note-learning sites, and their own keyboards.
Due to COVID-19, the CSD Board voted to decrease annual dues from $150 to $50 for the 2020-21 season. Dues may be paid in 2 installments, September and January. Dues for new members joining in the spring of 2021 will be $25. Scholarship funds are available to members for whom payment of dues constitutes a hardship. You may request assistance by emailing us at email@example.com or calling the CSD office at 919-560-2733.
