Announcing The Wynkoop Fellowships
To honor Dr. Rodney Wynkoop on the 35th anniversary of his musical direction, the Choral Society of Durham is excited to announce the establishment of a fellowship program in his name. We are developing this program in grateful celebration of both his passionate commitment to the Choral Society’s continuing artistic growth and his equal determination to make the joys of choral music accessible to all. It is our hope that, through this means of honoring him, the Choral Society will continue to embody Rodney’s dedication to both musical and societal goals for years to come.
For some aspiring chorus members — especially in these uncertain times — finances can be an obstacle. the costs of concert attire or child care for weekly rehearsals, for example, may prevent a gifted singer from joining the Choral Society.
While we have always worked to keep members’ dues and music purchases within bounds, and have even been able to offer singers limited financial assistance upon application, we would like to step up, in Rodney’s honor, CSD’s commitment to affordability
The Wynkoop Fellowships will be available to singers who qualify by audition for membership but who may be prevented by financial hardship from joining — or continuing in — the Choral Society. A limited number of Fellows will receive financial support, renewable for two years, to be applied to direct costs of membership, including but not restricted to annual dues, music scores, concert apparel, child care, and transportation. Eligibility will be determined through application and interview.
We plan to publicize and promote The Wynkoop Fellowships vigorously, with the expectation that they will support not only deserving singers but also our ongoing efforts to broaden and enrich our musical community.
This Fellowship has been in planning for some months, but, understandably, some details of its conditions and implementation have been on hold until Rodney was informed of the project and could join us in working them out. With his collaboration, we hope to be ready to launch the program by late Spring 2021, so that our first Fellows can join us for the 2021-2022 season. Later this winter, when remaining details have been made final, we will begin our fundraising campaign. (If you are ready to contribute now, of course, you are most welcome to click below or mail a check payable to Choral Society of Durham, P.O. Box 72182, Durham, NC 27722, please note on your check that this is for The Wynkoop Fellowships.)
We hope you will join in our joyful and grateful celebration of Rodney’s 35th anniversary with the Choral Society of Durham.
