The Choral Society of Durham invites singers in our community who share our love of choral music to audition for our upcoming season. Auditions for new members are typically held on the first two Mondays of September and again in early January and do not require a prepared musical piece. You will be asked to sing some simple warm-ups before sight-reading and learning a short musical excerpt.
Acceptance is based on audition performance and the number of spaces available in each voice section, as determined by the conductor.
- Good sight-reading ability
- Accurate pitch
- The ability to blend well with other voices
Members in good standing are not required to re-audition each year, except at the conductor’s discretion. Members who have taken leave for two or more consecutive semesters must re-audition. If you are auditioning, you should attend all regularly scheduled rehearsals while you are awaiting audition results. If you are accepted into CSD, any non-optional rehearsals you missed before being accepted will count as absences. Audition results are sent by email after all auditions have been completed.
Members meeting all requirements (e.g. maintaining acceptable attendance) may return each semester without re-auditioning..
The Choral Society rehearses on Monday evenings during the concert season (September to May), from 7:30 to 9:45, at the Durham Arts Council Building. Click here to see the CSD 2016-17 schedule for singers. Additional rehearsals will be scheduled during concert week and occasionally at other times during the semester. The current rehearsal schedule is posted on our web site.
Members are expected to attend each rehearsal in its entirety. Attendance at dress rehearsals is mandatory. Members are required to check in on roll sheets at each rehearsal (including dress rehearsals) and at all concerts. Members may not miss more than 2 rehearsals per semester.
Annual dues are $100 and may be paid in installments. Dues for new members joining in the Spring semester are $50. Scholarship funds are available to members for whom payment of dues constitutes a hardship. You may request assistance by speaking with the society’s president or treasurer.
