  • Sunday, Dec. 11, 4:00 p.m. (Christmas Oratorio parts IV-VI)

in beautiful Duke University Chapel

The Choral Society of Durham celebrates Christmas with one of the great sacred works written for the season, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. In beautiful Duke Chapel, the choir will perform the first three cantatas on Saturday, December 10, and the second three on Sunday, December 11. The work was originally presented as a cycle on six different days between Christmas and Epiphany. The story of Christ’s birth is taken from the gospels of Luke and Matthew and sung in recitative, while choruses, solos, and a number of familiar and well-loved chorales add a variety of musical textures. Both concerts will also include a selection of traditional German carols. Plan to attend both concerts, for a rare opportunity to hear in its entirety Bach’s dramatic and joyful setting of the Christmas story.
